Bordeaux, famous 18th century city surrounded by ancient and prestigious vineyards.

The Bordeaux region is home to many of the most superior wine producers in the world. Both red and white wines are made here.

This region is divided into subregions including Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, Médoc, and Graves. The area's five 'premier cru' (first growth) red wines (four from Médoc and one, Chateau Haut-Brion, from Graves), established by the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 are among the most sought after and expensive wines in the world.

The city of Bordeaux is built on an arc of the river Garonne, and is divided into two parts: the right bank to the East and left bank in the West.
Some of the tourist attractions in this marvellous city include:

Le Grand Theatre
Constructed by the architect Victor Louis between 1773 and 1780 on the site of an old Roman temple in Bordeaux . The Neoclassical Grand Theatre is one of the finest buildings of its type in France. Its colonnade, topped by statues, looks out over the Place de la Comédie.

Place de la Bourse – with quays opening up to the Garonne, the square is the site of commercial buildings such as the Stock Exchange and the Custom House. A fountain dedicated to the three Graces is in the center of the square.

Palais Rohan:
Or the Hotel de Ville (city hall). It used to be the old archbishop's palace and can be dated back to the early middle-ages. In 1771 archbischop Ferdinand-Maximilien Meriadec de Rohan decided to restructure the building and give it its present look. The front and the back of the main structure are identical. The 2 pavillions are now part of the museum of fine arts.

Cathedrale St. Andre – the main features of the cathedral are its Royal Door and the North Door, covered with sculpted ornamentation. The church is dominated by pointed spires. The Tour Pey-Berland – the cathedral’s belfry, is built on a site with foundations dating back to 900 years ago.

Musee des Beaux Arts – located near the Palais Rohan, this museum boasts a collection of paintings by titian, Veronese and French favourite Delacroix.
